This is what happens when you say YES.

Yes to big ideas. Not to marriage proposals. So just… get that thought of the way. (If you listen quietly, you can hear my mom weeping).

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about saying Yes. I wrote about branching out and creating a list of 10 liberating and slightly irresponsible choices and using the month of June  to jump into the deep scary end of the ocean of living. Here is the list and what I’ve done so far…

1. Instead of skipping out on the bill (which was suggested in the original list- which? Is too …READ MORE

31

To my grade 3 class,

I have exactly 31 teaching days with you left. You don’t realize this yet- you are eight years old and the concept of counting down to something other than Christmas is beyond your reality. You are living for soccer at recess and spelling games and Art class on Friday. You live for computer class free time and the moment you realize how to multiply 6 by 7. That’s one of my favourite things about you- you aren’t thinking about tomorrow because you are too busy filling up today.

And you’ve filled up my year beyond …READ MORE

Giuliana Rancic, Anger & My Clean Bathroom

Everything came to a point today when I told Giuliana Rancic that her tweet was dumb and she sounded shallow. Sure, I said it differently, but that’s what I was feeling when she told her 2,152,611 followers to compliment people today and then only gave examples that related to appearance.

I’m not sure why I even gave it a second thought but before I knew it- I was steaming about it. I promptly replied that it sounded like a great idea but complimenting someone on something besides their appearance might make it even better.  And then I thought about it …READ MORE

On Twitter

I was on the phone with a friend recently and mentioned Twitter. My friend (who lives an almost technology free existence) started asking questions. TOO MANY QUESTIONS.

Her: “Soo, explain to me how you decide what is worthy of writing about on twitter?”

Me: “Um.. if it’s a thought in my head.”

Her: ” So it’s just random thoughts?”

Me: “Well you make it sound unimportant!”

Her: “Have you ever talked about your lunch?”

Me: “Irrelevant!”

Her: “So that’s a yes.”

Me: “Twitter changes lives. It finds dogs and people. AND STARTS REVOLUTIONS. JUST LEAVE TWITTER ALONE.”

Her: “You are …READ MORE

“Love means you gotta use your words when you are fighting about the dishwater again”

He meant “dishwasher”. We clarified when he brought it up to my desk for me to check.

See, the thing is, teaching 3 grade is the best. The kids are independent, they get your jokes (well most of them unless you try to tell something that doesn’t involve the words “knock knock”), yet they still want hugs and draw you pictures of flowers and a sun wearing sunglasses and tell you that you are the prettiest person in the world. (It would be wrong to argue with them).

So every so often we skip learning cursive (because daily cursive practice …READ MORE

How could you not love this?

Today I gave my grade 4 class a writing assignment. They were to write a persuasive letter to anyone- on any topic. Some of my students wrote to their parents wanting an increase in allowance, some wrote to the school principal- begging for school to be extended (yes, I have THOSE students). But one student wrote to me. He didn’t write the most articulate letter, nor did he ace the spelling, but it made me smile like a lottery winner, so I thought I would share it with you.

Dear best teacher.

I am writing to you to tell you …READ MORE

On BSG, Michael Bolton & a little team called the COLTS

One of the best reasons to have a blog (other than the free swag- I’m STILL WAITING FOR GAP TO START THROWING PARTIES FOR CANADIAN BLOGGERS- I’M JUST SAYING), is that it’s easy to see what you were doing one week ago, or one month ago or one year ago. You can simply just click in the archives and you will find your past feelings and thoughts and anecdotes perfectly preserved. You can hit a particular month and find out what was breaking your heart, how drunk you got on cheap wine at your friends party, what social causes were …READ MORE

10 in 2010

I considered doing a “let’s reflect on everything that happened in 2009” post, but honestly? My brain works better moving forward, rather than looking back. And although 2009 had some ultra, let’s-just-up-and-down-clapping-our-hands-we-are-so-damn-happy-I-look-drunk-with-joy, moments (hello new job! hello H.A.D! hello bangs that don’t make me look like I’m 9 years old!)- I’m ready to move into 2010.

So in the spirit of reflection and moving forward (and yes, it’s possible to do both), here’s 10 great, big, off-the-charts,shout-out-loud, moments I’m excited for in 2010.

1. I’m really working hard on being a better teacher. December… well, let’s just say December left …READ MORE

fevah Part II

Oh, hi. I’m dying.

Okay maybe not but *whatever the hell I’m battling, it’s currently kicking my ass. Like, if me and this sickness were in a boxing  ring, I’d be pinned to the mat yelling “SWEET MOTHER OF GOD, I GIVE UP, YOU WIN- TAKE EVERY SEASON OF THE WEST WING! TAKE MY VINTAGE WRANGLERS FROM THE 70′S THAT DO WONDERS FOR MY BUM! TAKE AWAY SWEET POTATO FRIES FROM THE EARTH! “, the second the starting bell was heard.

I was feeling tremendously sorry for myself while watching ** Lecture 3 in Game Theory (sexily titled “Iterative Deletion …READ MORE

The One Where I Show You My Diamond Encrusted Toothbrush & Tell You Things Every Blogger Should Know

I was feeling listy. It was either this or “Ten Swear Words I Said Today Before 9 am“- I really was going to go with that one but three of them made me blush, that’s why I’m going with this. And before anyone complains, yes- I feel that blogging for almost three years (*holey cheese!) makes me a certified expert on blogging even if I a) don’t own my own domain b) have yet to make single dollar off my blog (but I have got a lot of free stuff?) c) have a nervous breakdown every time I try and …READ MORE
