Everyone else is a grasshopper, life lesson, lists, love or something like it, mindful happiness, no i haven't gotten laid, p.s. i love me, Slyvia Path has nothing on me, something I won't forget, sometimes you just have to leap, the last line is my favourite, the title says it all, this one might be my favourite, when i say it anyway If you don’t know me or haven’t followed my blog, you may not know this about me:
I was once very angry. Not outwardly angry- not slash your tires angry or kick the wall with your boots on angry. I wasn’t even punch a pillow angry. I was anger turned inward- a soul crushing sort of inner angry that manifested itself through debilitating depression that left me unable to get out of bed and at times, suicidal.
Well that was one hell of an opener. (I promise, it gets more light hearted…).
The hows and whys of how one gets …READ MORE

August 6th, 2012 in advice, and now you might know everything, confession of the day, I'm yoda. Everyone else is a grasshopper, it seemed like a good idea at the time..., it's a long one (twss), it's okay- you can skim this one, just do what i say, lists, school, soapbox, the J.O.B., the title says it all, when I go all Dr. Phil on you I’m a teacher.
I spend one thousand, three hundred and twenty three hours a year with kids.
I have taught every grade from two to eight. I don’t have a doctorate and I’ve never written a book but I do feel like when it comes to working with kids, I have some insight. I’m sure there’s a secret teacher handbook sitting on some shelf somewhere that says “DO NOT TELL PEOPLE OUR SECRETS”, but I think there are certain things that parents should know. And would make the world run ten thousand times better.
Secret #1: Of course we have …READ MORE

Ahh, so this is what it’s like to be inspired!
On a recent road trip, I listened to The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die (STAY WITH ME, NOW) and it blew my mind in the way that only having someone articulate the things you already believe deep down inside but don’t know how to say does. The secrets are based on interviews with people who were nominated all across Canada and the United States due to the wisdom, happiness and contentment they displayed to those around …READ MORE
Congratulations to Miranda and Sarahdotcom for each winning a copy of A Short History of Nearly Everything. Hurrah! Send me your addresses and when the MAIL STRIKE is over, you will get your packages!
Now. Tomorrow is my last official day with my class and let’s just face facts. I’m not mentally ready to let go of my little burritos. Nor am I capable of even writing about them. (Whoa. I just said ‘nor’? Who do I think I am, Charles Dickens?) I’m going to work hard to not cry tomorrow. My ugly cry sounds like a pair of tone deaf whales …READ MORE
So it’s summer. Which is great, because I’m tired of it being spring. As soon as people talk of spring, some asshole has to throw in the word ‘cleaning’ then I feel like I need to spend every free weekend washing floors and scrubbing dishes. But once summer hits, suddenly people start talking about reading and that whole nasty ‘spring cleaning’ idea is thrown out with as much grace as Courtney Love shows after a three day bender.
As someone who adores books in big ways, I love the idea of an entire season dedicated to reading. A morning curled …READ MORE

Overcoming first day back after vacation jitters, taming my wild hair, explaining what a galaxy is to 8 year olds, reminding myself that taking medication doesn’t mean I’m failing, declaring war on an ancient photocopier with a love of eating important documents, writing a speech to the bride that sums up 12 years of friendship, teaching 12 year olds how to solve for X and going through “Arrested Development” withdrawal.
Those are my current battles, what are yours?
(Also I updated my blogroll- check out my “links” tab! It’s still a work in progress but I’m …READ MORE
March 31st, 2011 in advice, books i'm not writing, I don't know what day it is, i love fragment sentences, i should be a P.S.A., I'm scared to see the search engine results to this, it seemed like a good idea at the time..., it's always easier to say it than do it, it's ironic because I'm Canadian, lists, oh look! i have opinions., self improvement, the title says it all, the world according to me Let’s be clear. I didn’t come up with this list while quoting Gandhi and emptying out the entire contents of my bank account to give to a third world nation. I actually started this list to remind myself how I want to try and live. I easily get caught up in bad habits- and thought tattooing “STOP SWEARING LOUDLY WHILE SHAKING YOUR FIST AT BAD DRIVERS” to my forehead was extreme and a bit too long for my tiny forehead. So I wrote a list to remind myself of how to behave like a normal human being. Some people create …READ MORE
It’s a funny thing- to open your mailbox and expect to get a greeting from a friend or a shipping invoice from yet another late night online shopping binge and instead find yourself reading an email from someone, a stranger- who is so clearly disappointed in you and angry with you that it almost takes your breath away. Of course, the first instinct is to assume it’s a joke. CLEARLY no one can be that invested in the life of someone they haven’t bothered to ever talk to or email before to send out such an angry note. And so …READ MORE
